Clicker Heroes is an idle RPG where you defeat monsters, recruit heroes, increase DPS, beat bosses, ascend for Hero Souls, and push through higher zones.
Clicker Heroes is an incremental idle RPG from Playsaurus where you click monsters for damage, collect the gold they drop, recruit heroes, and upgrade your team to push through increasingly difficult zones. As your heroes become stronger, they deal damage automatically, turning the early click-heavy gameplay into a long-term progression system built around DPS, hero upgrades, bosses, Ascension, Hero Souls, and later prestige mechanics.
The original browser version appeared in 2014, while the Steam edition launched on May 13, 2015. The current game features more than 35 heroes and continues across an effectively endless sequence of zones where enemy health and rewards increase as you progress.
You begin by manually clicking the monster on screen. Each click deals damage, and defeated enemies drop gold. That gold is used to hire heroes and level them up.
Heroes produce damage per second, commonly shortened to DPS. Once your automatic DPS becomes strong enough, enemies can be defeated without constant clicking. The official Clicker Heroes site also confirms that heroes continue fighting and earning gold while you are away from the game.
Progress is divided into zones. Regular areas require you to defeat a group of monsters before moving forward, while every fifth zone is normally a boss battle. Bosses have more health and must be defeated before the timer expires.
The core browser controls are mouse based. The official game instructions describe clicking enemies to damage them and using the interface to recruit and upgrade heroes.
Manual clicking is important at the beginning because your roster has little or no automatic damage. Once several heroes are hired and leveled, however, their combined DPS becomes the main source of monster damage.
This changes how you spend gold. An early hero may provide a large improvement for a low cost, but repeatedly leveling an outdated hero eventually becomes inefficient compared with unlocking a stronger one.
Check how much extra DPS an upgrade provides relative to its price. The most useful purchase is usually the one that helps you reach the next progression threshold fastest.
Bosses appear regularly throughout the zone progression. Unlike ordinary monsters, a boss must be killed within a limited time. If your DPS is too low, you cannot simply wait indefinitely for your heroes to finish the fight.
A failed boss is therefore an indicator that your current build needs more damage. You can return to an earlier zone, collect additional gold, improve heroes, and attempt the boss again.
When a boss repeatedly survives with only a small amount of health remaining, a few hero upgrades or a well-timed active skill may be enough to pass the zone.
Ascension is the central prestige mechanic in Clicker Heroes. Ascending resets your current zone progress, gold, and hero levels, but awards Hero Souls based on the progress you made before the reset. You then begin again from the early zones with permanent advantages that allow you to progress much faster.
Hero Souls are valuable even when they are not spent because they contribute bonus damage. They can also be used on Ancients, which provide specialized long-term bonuses.
The important idea is that resetting is not failure. Once progress becomes too slow, Ascension converts a stalled run into stronger future progression.
Ancients are purchased and improved with Hero Souls. Instead of simply increasing one hero's level, they provide broader bonuses that can support different approaches to progression.
Some builds emphasize idle DPS while others depend more heavily on active clicking. Because Hero Souls are limited early on, spending them without a plan can slow the next run.
Before purchasing an Ancient, consider whether its bonus supports the way you are currently generating most of your damage.
After reaching zone 300, Clicker Heroes introduces Transcendence, a larger reset system above Ascension. Transcending sacrifices progress including Hero Souls and Ancients in exchange for Ancient Souls and Transcendent Power, creating another layer of long-term progression.
This does not replace normal Ascension. A Transcendence cycle contains multiple Ascensions as you repeatedly rebuild, earn Hero Souls, and push toward higher zones.
Clicker Heroes supports two broad ways of making progress. Active play combines click damage, abilities, and hero DPS, while idle progression relies more heavily on automatic damage and gold generation.
| Approach | Main Focus |
|---|---|
| Active | Manual clicks, activated abilities, and hero DPS work together to defeat enemies quickly. |
| Idle | Heroes continue dealing automatic damage and earning gold with less manual input. |
Neither approach changes the basic goal: increase damage fast enough to keep moving into harder zones.
Gold that remains unused does not help defeat the next boss. When progression is still fast, reinvest regularly into heroes or upgrades that noticeably increase damage.
The cheapest hero is not always the most efficient purchase. Look for level milestones and upgrades that create a meaningful jump in DPS.
If the boss timer expires before you can win, return to a zone your heroes can defeat comfortably. Collect additional gold, strengthen the team, and then retry the boss.
Continuing one run forever is not the intended progression path. Once new zones and upgrades take increasingly long to reach, Hero Souls from Ascension can make the next run substantially faster.
Ancients support different damage strategies. Avoid spreading Hero Souls across upgrades that do not contribute to the way you actually play.

The goal is to increase your damage, defeat increasingly powerful monsters and bosses, and progress through higher zones. The game continues through repeated upgrade and prestige cycles.
The current official Steam description advertises more than 35 recruitable heroes, each contributing to your damage progression.
You restart from the early zones and lose the current run's ordinary progress, but gain Hero Souls that make future runs stronger.
Ascension resets a normal run for Hero Souls. Transcendence is a larger reset that sacrifices Hero Souls and Ancients in exchange for Ancient Souls and Transcendent Power.
Clicker Heroes was developed by Playsaurus. The browser game originally appeared in 2014, followed by the Steam edition in 2015.
Clicker Heroes starts with simple monster clicking but develops into a layered incremental system involving hero DPS, upgrades, boss timers, Hero Souls, Ancients, Ascension, and Transcendence. Invest gold where it produces meaningful damage, farm when a boss stops your run, and reset when permanent progression will let you reach higher zones faster than continuing the current attempt.
