Pokemon Red is a classic Kanto RPG where you catch and train Pokémon, earn eight Gym Badges, battle Team Rocket, and challenge the Pokémon League.
Pokemon Red, officially titled Pokémon Red Version, is a turn-based role-playing game where you travel through the Kanto region, catch Pokémon, train a team, defeat Gym Leaders, challenge rival Trainers, and work toward becoming Pokémon Champion. You begin in Pallet Town with one of three starter Pokémon—Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle—before setting out to collect Gym Badges and fill Professor Oak's Pokédex.
Pokémon Red is part of the first generation of Pokémon games. Game Freak developed the original games for Nintendo's Game Boy, with Pokémon Red and Blue arriving in North America in 1998. The adventure established many systems that remain central to the series, including Pokémon types, four-move battle sets, Gyms, the Elite Four, trading, and version-exclusive Pokémon.
You explore Kanto from an overhead perspective, moving between towns, routes, caves, buildings, and other locations. Wild Pokémon can appear while traveling through areas such as tall grass and caves. These encounters let you battle the Pokémon, weaken it, and attempt to capture it with a Poké Ball.
Caught Pokémon can become part of your active team. Battles award experience, allowing Pokémon to gain levels, learn moves, and in many cases evolve into stronger forms. Each Pokémon can know up to four moves, and Generation I uses 15 battle types with different offensive and defensive matchups.
The main progression path is built around eight Pokémon Gyms. Defeating their Leaders earns Badges and eventually grants access to the Pokémon League, where you face the Elite Four and the reigning Champion.
The original Game Boy version uses the Control Pad together with the A, B, START, and SELECT buttons. Browser emulators may map these buttons to different keyboard keys, so the exact keyboard mapping depends on the player being used. The original controls are documented as follows.
Your starter becomes the first member of your team. Bulbasaur is Grass/Poison, Charmander begins as a Fire type, and Squirtle is a Water type. The rival immediately chooses the starter whose type has an advantage over yours, giving the opening decision an effect that continues through later rival battles.
No starter prevents you from finishing the game. The important part is building the rest of your team around weaknesses your starter cannot cover. A varied party gives you more options when Gym Leaders and other Trainers specialize in types that resist your main Pokémon.
Kanto's Gym challenge introduces eight Leaders with different type specialties. The original lineup consists of Brock, Misty, Lt. Surge, Erika, Koga, Sabrina, Blaine, and Giovanni. Defeating all eight is required before challenging the Pokémon League.
| Gym Leader | Specialty |
|---|---|
| Brock | Rock |
| Misty | Water |
| Lt. Surge | Electric |
| Erika | Grass |
| Koga | Poison |
| Sabrina | Psychic |
| Blaine | Fire |
| Giovanni | Ground |
Preparing more than one usable Pokémon is helpful because relying entirely on a single high-level team member can become inefficient when its attacks are poorly matched against a particular Gym.
Generation I contains five Hidden Machines: Cut, Fly, Surf, Strength, and Flash. Cut, Surf, and Strength are required to complete the main journey, while other HMs make exploration and travel easier. Certain Badges are required before these moves can be used outside battle.
HM moves require planning in Pokémon Red because they cannot normally be forgotten once taught. Avoid filling all four move slots of an important battler with utility moves unless they are also useful to your strategy.
Pokémon Red and Blue were deliberately given different Pokémon distributions to encourage trading. Red-exclusive families include Pokémon such as Ekans, Oddish, Mankey, Growlithe, Scyther, and Electabuzz, while Pokémon including Sandshrew, Vulpix, Meowth, Bellsprout, Pinsir, and Magmar belong to Blue's exclusive group.
The Generation I Pokédex contains 151 species, but you cannot normally obtain every species entirely within one copy of Pokémon Red. Trading is necessary for version exclusives and Pokémon that evolve through trading, while Mew was originally event-exclusive rather than a normal in-game capture.
A balanced party handles type matchups much better than one overleveled starter. Keep several team members close enough in level that you can switch when your current Pokémon has a poor matchup.
Move type affects damage effectiveness in Generation I. A lower-powered move with a favorable matchup may outperform a stronger attack that the opponent resists.
Generation I does not provide a normal way to delete HM moves. Decide which Pokémon will carry Cut, Surf, Strength, Fly, and Flash before filling valuable move slots.
Long caves and routes may contain several Trainer battles and wild encounters. Healing before entering reduces the chance that an already weakened party runs out of usable Pokémon far from the next town.
Some rare Pokémon are encountered only in specific locations. Saving beforehand gives you another opportunity if the encounter ends without the result you wanted.
Pokémon Red should not be confused with Pokémon FireRed. Red is the Generation I Game Boy adventure, while FireRed is a later Game Boy Advance remake released in 2004. FireRed keeps the basic Kanto journey but uses later-generation mechanics, graphics, content, and Pokémon systems.
If you are playing Pokemon Red, expect the original Generation I rules rather than the systems introduced in FireRed and later games.
The main progression goal is to earn all eight Kanto Gym Badges, defeat the Elite Four, and defeat the Champion. Completing the Pokédex provides a parallel collection objective.
You can begin with Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle. Your rival chooses the starter with a favorable type matchup against yours.
Generation I contains 151 Pokémon species. Not all can normally be obtained from Pokémon Red alone, so trading is required for a complete collection.
Pokémon Red was developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo. The international Red and Blue versions reached North America in 1998.
After defeating the Pokémon League and Champion, Cerulean Cave becomes accessible. The powerful Legendary Pokémon Mewtwo waits inside.
Pokemon Red is built around exploration, collecting, team building, and turn-based battles. Catch Pokémon that cover different types, keep multiple party members trained, use Gym Badges and HMs to open new parts of Kanto, and prepare your team for the Elite Four rather than relying on one Pokémon for every battle. The journey from Pallet Town to Indigo Plateau is straightforward to understand, but your team choices determine how you handle the challenges along the way.
