Undertale Yellow is a fan-made RPG prequel where you guide Clover through puzzles, bullet-hell battles, character choices, and multiple story routes.
Undertale Yellow is a fan-made turn-based RPG and prequel to Toby Fox's Undertale. You control Clover, a human associated with the yellow Justice SOUL, as they travel through previously unseen parts of the Underground while searching for the five humans who disappeared before them. Exploration, puzzles, character conversations, bullet-hell battles, equipment, and player choices all influence how the journey develops.
The project was created by Team Undertale Yellow under director Master Sword. Development began in 2016, a demo appeared later that year, and the complete game was released on December 9, 2023 after several years of development.
The game alternates between overworld exploration and turn-based encounters. While exploring, Clover moves through locations such as the Dark Ruins, Snowdin, the Dunes, and the Steamworks, talking with characters, collecting equipment, finding items, using SAVE points, and solving environmental puzzles.
Enemy encounters shift into a battle screen. You choose an action, then survive the enemy's attack by moving Clover's SOUL around the Bullet Board and avoiding incoming projectiles. Undertale Yellow keeps the basic fight-or-spare structure of Undertale but adds mechanics designed around Clover's gun and Justice theme.
Your choices are important because the game supports three primary routes: Pacifist, Neutral, and Genocide. You can complete the adventure without killing monsters, defeat only some enemies, or deliberately clear areas of their encounters. These decisions cause later scenes, battles, and story progression to diverge.
The keyboard layout follows the familiar Undertale-style control scheme, while the game also provides controller configuration for Confirm, Cancel, and Menu functions. Sprinting can be automated through the accessibility settings.
The FIGHT command works differently from the standard Undertale attack meter. Early in the game, attacking uses a circular target. A ring moves toward the center, and stopping it near the middle produces a stronger shot. Waiting too long and allowing it to reach the exact center causes the attack to miss.
Later, Clover obtains the Wild Revolver, which changes the attack interface to six rotating targets. This weapon can strike up to six times and becomes an important part of the later combat system.
Attacking is only one option. ACT commands allow you to interact with opponents, while MERCY can end encounters peacefully after the required conditions are met. This makes understanding an enemy's behavior useful even when you do not intend to defeat it through damage.
After Clover takes a turn, enemies attack inside the Bullet Board. You control the SOUL and avoid projectiles until the pattern finishes. Individual bosses can modify the normal rules, introducing their own movement restrictions, shooting mechanics, rhythm sequences, or other battle-specific ideas.
Do not move constantly just because projectiles are appearing. Some patterns are easier to read with small corrections. Moving to an extreme corner without considering the next part of the attack can leave you with fewer escape routes.
Undertale Yellow retains three main route types. A Pacifist playthrough avoids killing enemies, a Neutral run includes some kills without meeting the Genocide requirements, and a Genocide run deliberately eliminates the required encounters in major areas.
The routes are more than alternate labels for the same adventure. Choices can change dialogue, available encounters, puzzles, companions, boss fights, and sections of later areas. The Steamworks in particular contains significant route-dependent differences.
If you want to experience a specific route, make consistent decisions from the beginning instead of assuming that every choice can be reversed near the end.
Combat is only part of the game. Clover travels through new regions of the Underground that contain mechanical puzzles, movement challenges, interactive computers, maze-like areas, and character-driven events.
Snowdin includes environmental puzzles using the Arrow Keys, while the Steamworks contains machinery, chemistry challenges, moving platforms, and route-dependent puzzle sequences.
When progress appears blocked, inspect the current room before leaving. A nearby switch, control panel, NPC, or puzzle mechanism often provides the solution rather than requiring additional combat.
During bullet-hell turns, first identify where projectiles are traveling. Small movements often preserve more safe space than repeatedly crossing the entire Bullet Board.
Using a strong healing item after minor damage may leave you without it when a boss has longer or more complicated attack patterns. Check Clover's remaining HP and the threat of the current encounter before consuming limited resources.
If you are pursuing a peaceful route, simply waiting is not always enough. Enemy-specific ACT commands and dialogue can reveal what is required to make MERCY available.
The full game adds a run function, making backtracking and longer overworld sections faster. Auto-Sprint can also be enabled in the accessibility settings if you prefer not to hold the sprint button continuously.
SAVE points protect your progress and provide a useful checkpoint before difficult sections. When you reach one in a new area, using it is generally safer than continuing through several unknown rooms first.
Undertale Yellow is a fan-made RPG prequel to Undertale. It follows Clover, the human associated with the yellow Justice SOUL, during an earlier journey through the Underground.
The game was developed by Team Undertale Yellow and directed by Master Sword. Development began in 2016.
The completed version of Undertale Yellow was released on December 9, 2023. A demo had previously been released on November 30, 2016.
Yes. The game supports a Pacifist route where Clover avoids killing monsters, alongside Neutral and Genocide routes based on different choices.
It keeps the turn-based menu and bullet-dodging foundation, but Clover's gun introduces a different FIGHT timing system, and several bosses add their own battle mechanics.
Undertale Yellow combines exploration, puzzles, character interactions, turn-based choices, and bullet-hell defense around Clover's search through the Underground. Pay attention to enemy behavior before acting, manage equipment and healing carefully, and remember that the way you treat monsters can change much more than an individual battle. Your decisions shape which version of Clover's journey you experience.
