Play Mortal Kombat, choose from seven classic fighters, use punches, kicks, blocks and special moves, defeat Goro and Shang Tsung, and finish the tournament.
Mortal Kombat is the original 1992 one-on-one fighting game from Midway where you choose a martial artist and battle through a tournament of increasingly difficult opponents. Matches combine punches, kicks, blocking, throws, jumping attacks, and character-specific special moves. Win the required rounds, survive the tournament ladder, and eventually face powerful bosses including Goro and Shang Tsung. Mortal Kombat is also known for its Fatality system, which gives the winner a brief opportunity to perform a character-specific finishing move after defeating an opponent.
The original Mortal Kombat is a 2D arcade fighting game released by Midway in 1992. Instead of controlling a team or exploring levels, you select one fighter and compete in direct matches where reducing the opponent's health is the immediate objective.
The original playable roster contains seven fighters: Johnny Cage, Kano, Raiden, Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Sonya Blade. Each character shares basic fighting actions but has a different selection of special techniques.
Matches use a best-of-three-round structure. Winning two rounds defeats the current opponent and moves you farther through the tournament.
The original arcade game uses an eight-direction joystick and five combat buttons. Browser versions based on emulation can map these functions to different keyboard keys, so check the controls shown by the specific version you are playing rather than assuming one universal keyboard layout.
| Arcade Input | Action |
|---|---|
| 8-way joystick | Move, crouch, and jump |
| High Punch | Perform high punch attacks and certain special moves |
| Low Punch | Perform low punch attacks and certain special moves |
| High Kick | Perform high kick attacks |
| Low Kick | Perform low kick attacks |
| Block | Defend against incoming attacks |
Universal techniques include jumping punches and kicks, crouching attacks, uppercuts, sweeps, roundhouse kicks, and close-range attacks. Character-specific moves use combinations of directional inputs and attack buttons.
Johnny Cage combines standard martial arts attacks with special techniques such as a projectile and Shadow Kick. His move set gives him options for both approaching an opponent and attacking from farther away.
Kano uses distinctive attacks including a knife projectile and his spinning Kano Ball. His different attack ranges mean you need to recognize when to pressure from close distance and when to use a special move from farther away.
Raiden can attack with lightning, teleport to reposition himself, and launch across the screen with his flying Torpedo technique. These abilities make movement and distance especially important when using or fighting against him.
Liu Kang uses techniques including a fireball and Flying Kick. His special moves provide both a ranged attack and a direct way to close distance quickly.
Scorpion's signature Spear can pull an opponent toward him, while his Teleport Punch gives him another way to attack from an unexpected position.
Sub-Zero can freeze an opponent temporarily and use a sliding attack along the ground. The freeze is especially important because it can create time for a follow-up attack if it connects successfully.
Sonya's special techniques include a projectile and Leg Scissors attack, giving her several ways to change the rhythm of a close-range fight.
Mortal Kombat has a dedicated Block input rather than relying entirely on holding backward. This means defense needs to be deliberate. If the opponent begins an attack string, blocking can be safer than immediately trying another punch or kick.
Do not hold Block permanently, though. Remaining defensive gives the opponent more freedom to change position or prepare another attack. Use blocking to survive pressure, then respond when their attack finishes or misses.
Each fighter has commands that produce attacks unavailable through ordinary punches and kicks. These inputs generally combine directions with a specific attack button.
For example, Scorpion's Spear, Sub-Zero's Freeze, Liu Kang's Fireball, and Raiden's Teleport all use their own input sequences. Learning two or three dependable special moves for one character is usually more useful than trying to memorize the entire roster immediately.
Special attacks also need appropriate spacing. A projectile may be useful when the opponent is far away, while a close-range technique becomes more valuable after you have moved into striking distance.
After you win the deciding round, Mortal Kombat can display a Finish Him or Finish Her prompt. During this brief period, the winning fighter can enter a specific command to perform a Fatality. Each playable character has a signature finishing sequence in the original game.
Fatality commands can depend on both the button sequence and your distance from the defeated opponent. Some require you to stand close, while others work from farther away.
A Fatality is a finishing action rather than a requirement for winning the match. The fight has already been decided before the finishing prompt appears.
Single-player Mortal Kombat progresses through a Battle Plan containing the playable fighters. Later stages introduce Endurance Matches, where you must deal with consecutive opponents within the same challenge. After the endurance portion, the major boss encounters are Goro and Shang Tsung.
This structure makes consistency important. Winning one favorable matchup is not enough; you need to handle characters with different projectiles, movement options, ranges, and special attacks as the ladder continues.
Start with one character and learn their basic movement, reliable normal attacks, and a small set of special moves. Constantly switching characters makes it harder to remember command sequences and effective distances.
If an opponent already has the offensive advantage, repeatedly attacking can cause you to lose exchanges. Block the pressure first, then respond after the opponent completes a move.
The uppercut is performed from a crouching position with a punch input and can be a strong response at close range. Avoid using it automatically from distances where it cannot connect.
Characters such as Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Kano, Sonya, and Raiden have ranged special attacks. Repeating the same projectile timing makes your pattern easier to anticipate. Mix ranged pressure with movement and normal attacks.
If you want to perform a finishing move, first know whether its command requires close range, sweep distance, or another position. Entering the correct sequence from the wrong distance can cause the attempt to fail.

The original Mortal Kombat was developed and released by Midway for arcades in 1992.

Reduce the opponent's health and win two rounds before they do. The original arcade battles use a best-of-three-round format.
Goro appears as the major sub-boss near the top of the single-player ladder, followed by the final opponent, Shang Tsung.
A Fatality is a character-specific finishing move that can be performed after winning the deciding round when the Finish Him or Finish Her prompt appears.
Mortal Kombat rewards players who combine offense with controlled defense. Learn your fighter's normal attacks, understand the distance required for special moves, block when the opponent has momentum, and avoid relying on the same approach every round. As you progress through the Battle Plan and endurance fights toward Goro and Shang Tsung, recognizing each opponent's options becomes just as important as executing your own attacks.
